The Project

Working on our second project collaboration with Vistry Partnerships, we delivered the light gauge steel frame for a new four-storey residential development, Sandymoor, in Runcorn.

The scheme consisted of 100 specialist independent living apartments, which are owned and operated by Halton Housing and feature a range of contemporary facilities including a bistro and multi-function room.

Leveraging the full suite of Sigmat capability, from design to manufacturing to installation, the project was delivered three weeks ahead of the scheduled twenty four week programme.

Sigmat constructed a partial transfer structure at ground floor level, totalling 603m2 surface area, and installed 4,608 linear metres of wall panels to provide a total gross internal floor area of 9,737m2. The scheme also comprised of 24 flights of stairs, 12 quarter landings, 824m3 of concrete and 301 packs of plasterboard.

Tim Hough, Senior Project Manager at Vistry Partnership commented:

"Having not worked with LGSF before, I was sceptical about the benefits of using it. With the frame now completed it has changed my opinion completely, and I would highly recommend this modern method of construction, in particular where floor plates repeat.

The package that Sigmat provided was for the frame, stairs and structural concrete floors. We were handed over a complete floor plate, with 25 apartments per floor, every three and a half weeks – which is phenomenal. This aided our programme and site time and took the external brickwork façade off the critical path. Furthermore, wet and cold weather did not affect the programme as Sigmat could work through it. They completed their works on site three weeks early.

The quality, accuracy and tight tolerances employed by Sigmat produced a structure which is easy to work with by other trades, such as window fitters, so other elements could be installed as the building was erected.

The ‘Sigsafe’ edge protection system, and other safety features designed and developed by Sigmat, meant that the building floorplates, lift shafts, risers, stairs and roof edge were all fully protected and safe for their own personnel and that of other trades to work in right away."

“It was a pleasure working with the Vistry team at Sandymoor and we were delighted to achieve early completion. It was a fantastic job to work on, highlighting once again the benefits of building in LGSF when it comes to speed and reliability.” Stephen Parker, Contracts Manager, Sigmat
